Mrs. Clara Elizabeth Hill

Clara Elizabeth Peterson Hill, was the youngest of thirteen children born to John and Martha Peterson on November 21, 1919 in Warfield, Virginia. After a lengthy life, Clara finished her earthly journey on July 2, 2017 at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia. As the Peterson family grew in numbers, so too did their bond as a family strengthening throughout their lifetimes. During her early years in Warfield, Virginia, like her brothers and sisters, Clara assumed household responsibilities in addition to attending church at Saint James Episcopal Church. Clara left Warfield, Virginia at an early age and moved to be closer to her sisters and brothers who migrated to Union County New Jersey. In 1939, Clara entered marriage with Randall Gwathney and it was through this union she celebrated the birth of her daughter, Ursell. On June 30,1954, Clara was joined in marriage with Charles Hill and they lived happily together in both New Jersey and Virginia until his untimely passing in 1984. As the youngest of thirteen children, Clara was pre-deceased by her parents, Martha and John, her brothers: John, Willie, James, Clarence, Albert, and Richard, her sisters: Mary, Sarah, Mattie, Julia, Flora, and Susie, her daughter, Ursell, her husband Charles, and her close family friend, Mary Marks. Clara is fondly remembered for her caring nature and kind spirit as she prided herself on the love for her family and being able to lend support whenever, wherever it was needed. Clara’s legacy will live forever in the hearts and minds of her grandchildren: Charles, Cassandra, Carl, Corey, and Curtis, great grandchildren: Shawnte, Shareese, Tyra, Krystal, Shannon, Tori, Curtis Jr, Tosh, Chris, Jazmaine, and Jacob, great great grandchildren: Dashawn, Hector Jr, Ursell, Jose, Jasmyne, Che’Layisha, Taliah, Amelia, Anthony Jr, Tedrick ll., Alessandra, Briella, Dominic, Ryaan, and Eli. Clara demonstrated unconditional love for all those in her family circle and she leaves to mourn a host of niece’s, nephew. family and friends. A memorial service for Mrs. Hill be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church located at 221 34th St. Newport News, VA. 23607 Please join us in comforting the Hill and Gwathney Families by uplifting them with your prayers.
