Mr. John E. Lewis

In the twinkling of eye, John Edward Lewis, 81, slipped into immortality on March 28, 2011. He was born to the late John E. Edwards and Sarah E. Lewis Jordan on June 11, 1929. Also preceded him in death, his step-father; Osie Jordan, sister; Frances Foster, brother; Walter Jordan and his nephew; Kenneth Chandler. John was educated in Newport News Public School System graduating from Huntington High School class of 1954 where he was an avid football player. Afterwards he worked briefly at Walter Harris Confectionery store on 18th Street and Ivy Avenue. John was drafted in the United States Army during Korea Conflict in which he served three years with an honorable discharge. Afterward he relocated to Philadelphia, PA where he resided forty-eight years and worked forty years for Spivey Corporation in Concordville, PA as a Laborer producing conveyer belts before retiring. After returning home in 2003, he joined Wesley Grove United Church of Christ in June 2004. He remained faithful until his health failed. John was affectionately called "Boot" Uncle Boot" John Boot" by his family and friends. He loved to sing with his male cousins as they harmonized at family reunions. John spent his last two years residing at Riverside Convalescent Center in Hampton. John will be lovingly remembered by his sisters; Barbara J. Howard and Sarah Elaine Chandler of Newport News; a devoted cousin; Robert Shields of Philadelphia, PA; 5 nieces; Barbara Pickett, Angela Bagley (Roland), Stephanie Joyner (Rickie), Sherita Jordan, Lynette and Yvette Chandler, 7 nephews; Lenest Jordan, Charles Jordan, Frankie Cherrye (Marlene), Michael Chandler, Marvin Chandler (Thomasina), Kevin and Carl Chandler and a host of great, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, 1 sister-in-law; Juanita Jordan. A homegoing service will be conducted at noon Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Ivy Baptist Church 50 Maple Avenue, NN. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, April 1 at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church. The family will assemble at the home of his niece, Barbara Pickett, 139 Findley Square Hpt. by 11 a.m. for the processional.
