Mr. Douglas Staley Mayo

October 2, 1955 - April 13, 2022

Douglas Staley Mayo took his final rest with the Lord on April 13, 2022, after a lengthy illness. Douglas was born to the late Lydia Mayo and Johnnie Mayo Sr in Durham, North Carolina, and as a young child relocated with his family to Newport News, Virginia. As a young child, he accepted Christ while attending First Church of Newport News (Baptist) where his mother taught Sunday School for many years. He attended the Newport News Public School System graduating from Warwick High School class of 1973. He attended Grambling University and later transferred to Hampton University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He played collegiate football and had a brief career with the National Football League. He was fondly referred to as "Mayo". Prior to medical retirement, Mayo worked in the law enforcement and security industry for many years . Mayo was a gentle, kind-natured person. He was humble and had simple pleasures. He enjoyed watching television, Grey's Anatomy was his all-time favorite television series. He loved sports, joking with family and the nursing facility staff, and a good meal. He was an avid Dog Lover. Mayo was a great father. He loved his family very much. He is survived by his brother Johnnie Mayo Jr., daughters; Passion Crawley, Tia Crawley, Verneka Hudson (Marcus), son, Danon Crawley, grandchildren; Chaneka Perry, Atiyana Crawley, Anthony Crisman Jr., Jabarri Vaughan, Rianna Santiago, Autumn Petty, Reon Hundley, and Jah-Mara Harris. Great-grandchildren; Brian Bond Jr., Jamar Allen, Jayden Vaughan, Briley Bond,Nazere Vaughan, lifelong companion Annette Crawley and a host of other relatives and friends. Special Thank You to Walter Reed Nursing and Rehab Center, Carole Johnson, and the Ware Unit Staff for the compassionate care rendered to him. We are forever grateful.
