October 22, 1943 - May 1, 2021
On May 1, 2021, our beloved Perry Barriton Murdock, affectionately known as "Butch", was called home by the Lord for eternal rest. His work here is done. Perry Barriton Murdock was born October 22, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Evelyn (Savage) and Perry Murdock, Sr. He was the youngest of two children. Perry "Butch" received his early education at Our Lady of Good Counsel, New York, where he also started his life with Christ and was baptized and received other Sacraments of Life. He continued his Junior High School education at Military Academy in South Carolina and returned to New York to conclude his secondary education at Franklin K. Lane. In 1961, Perry "Butch" began active service in the United States Marine Corps where he saw combat in the Vietnam War. During this period, he achieved promotion to the rank of Sgt. First Class. In 1967, he was honorably discharged. Upon his return from the service, Perry "Butch" returned to Brooklyn and began employment with the United States Postal Service. During his tenure with the Post Office, he took the New York Police Department exam. As a graduate of the Class of 1967 of the NYPD Transit Police Academy, he served 20 plus years as NY Finest, where developed long life friendships with the late Alex Gilchrist, the late Richard Edwards, Velma Hamilton, Stan Caldwell, John (Marion) Brown to name a few of the many, many lasting friendships. In the late 80's, Perry "Butch" decided to pack it in and retired from NYPD and began his journey to Richmond, Virginia, with the intent to live the "retired" life. Perry "Butch" couldn't sit still. He had a short spam with the City of Richmond Police Department leaving behind the name of "GrandPa Rookie", yet the younger cadets/recruits praised and honored him for his astonishing knowledge and experience. In 1988 the Postal Service called him back to duty and he continued until retirement in 2005 serving 22 years. In 1991, Perry "Butch" met the loving Doris Bland, through several years of courting Doris had the magic touch and he pop the question. August 19, 1995 Perry "Butch" and Doris joined in Holy Matrimony. After retirement Perry "Butch" remained an active member of the National Transit Guardians Association and enjoyed spending time with his grand-children. As a sports fan he enjoyed watching televised games of the NY Giants. He was a strong avid fan of his NY Team. Perry "Butch" touched the lives of many people with his generous and kind soul. He was a "people person" loving good company and good times. His heart and home was always open and he welcomed all who entered. He enjoyed visits and conversations with friends and family and always wanted to please all. Perry "Butch" was preceded in death by his brother, Reginald Brown; stepmother, Edith Murdock; son, Terrence "Terry" Bland; cousins, Gloria "Cutup" Smith (Eddie deceased), Blanch "Tilly" Taylor (Wylie deceased) and Sally Watts (Bob deceased). Perry "Butch" leaves to cherish fond memories: his loving wife, Doris (Bland) Murdock. Perry "Butch" will also forever be remembered by his beloved children: Angela Murdock-Ridley (James) of Brooklyn, NY, Tonya Hargrove (John) of Clayton, NC and Edythe Hollins (Anthony) of Bronx NY. He is treasured by eight grandchildren: Jasmine Murdock, Angelina Hargrove, Dominique Ridley, Courtney Ridley, Daric M. Tisdale, Andriana Hargrove, T'arie T. Bland, and Alena Hargrove; great-grandson, Jayden S. Johnson; ten loving and devoted cousins, Dorothy Magwood (Richard), James Murdock, Jr. (Dorothy), Allene "Sister" Maynard (Richard), Claire Langsford (Gene), Eloise "Chic" Giles (Bobby), Marjorie Watts, Walter Jenkins, Mary Thomas, Allen Murdock (Doris), and Carolyn Murdock; favorite uncle to his nephew and nieces, Benjamin Williams, Aja Williams-Powell (Donnell), Sonja Williams and Nishia Edwards; daughter-in-love, Shellie Tisdale; three grandchildren-in-love, Emmani Pearsall, Tylaijah Morton, and TyQuan Brandon; two spiritual grandchildren, Azair and Amari Anderson; three devoted sisters-in-law, Belinda "Jean" Edwards (Donnie), Carolyn Williams (Robin), and Barbara Williams; one brother-in-law, Bruce "Buck" Bland (Tunisia); godson, Alex Webb; dear devoted friends, Fred Wright, Wray Herring, Andrea (Trice) Mason, the Edwards Family and the Fitzgerald Family; along with a host of other family and friends, far too many to name. The late Jackie Robinson said, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." Perry "Butch" impacted so many lives with his infectious smile and personality. His celebration of life will continue through each of us as we carry out his legacy. Everything Perry "Butch" did, he did with class. A Celebration of Life will held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Tucker & Fisher Celebration of Life Chapel, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg, VA with Rev. Dr. Lynn G. Robinson, Pastor of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, VA officiating and Rev. Cory T. Bland, Pastor of New Light Baptist Church, Richmond, VA eulogizing. Interment will follow at the Bland Family Cemetery, Sutherland, VA. The service will be live streamed. Public viewing will be Friday, May 7, 2021 from 10:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. A facial covering along with social distancing will be required while attending all services.
