Mother Shirley Ruth Grady, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2020 at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell, VA. She was born August 18, 1933 in San Diego, California to the late John and Ophelia Jones. She was a resident of Petersburg, Virginia at the time of her passing but was a native of the home of her heart, Detroit, Michigan. Along with her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Elkroy Whiteside. Shirley received Christ and was a longtime member of Greater Missionary Baptist Church, Detroit, Michigan, where she resided most of her life. Relocating to Virginia later in life, she became a faithful and dedicated member of Zion Hill Temple of Prayer, Hopewell, Virginia under the leadership of Bishop Edward Blackwell, Jr. Shirley was a woman of fashion. She loved fashion coordination and decorating but her greatest love was her devotion to family and church. Shirley enjoyed life to the fullest and it showed in her vibrant personality. Her smile and laughter were contagious. Shirley had the ability to make anyone feel like family and treated them as such. She took pride in every aspect of her life reminding us of this to the end. She was a protective and caring mother whose words of wisdom, will remain in our heart forever. Words could never express the indelible mark she left on all that ever crossed her path in life. Shirley had a passion for life, but her most rewarding role was that of a grandmother. Shirley had a giving nature. Her life was challenging at times, but in every aspect she moved with love, grace, humility, and style. She is survived by her son, Don Robert Grady (Janice); grandchildren, Nancy and Keith Hayes, Shay and Latia Gentinili-Turman, Jahine Grady; great-grandchildren, Donovan Wade and Kiarra Hayes; brother-in-law, Richard Grady of Nashville, TN; devoted friends, Clarence Wilcox, Wanda Battle, Judy Gilbert, Bishop Edward Blackwell, Jr. and First Lady Ida "Mother" Blackwell; along with a host of other dedicated friends and extended family too numerous to name. A Memorial Service will be held 12:00 P.M., Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Zion Hill Temple of Prayer, 3107 Western St., Hopewell, VA with Bishop Edward Blackwell, Jr., Pastor, officiating. A face mask/covering will be required while attending services.
