Mrs. Viola Swinton

May 25, 1936 - August 4, 2021

Mrs. Viola Jackson Swinton passed away peacefully at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, Virginia on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at 85 years old. Viola loved being a caregiver to others and spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed providing her family with delicious meals EVERY DAY- THREE TIMES A DAY. Viola was born May 25, 1936, in Marion County, SC to the late Mary Elizabeth Jackson & Melton Dinkins, and was raised by her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Andrew & Eliza Jackson. Viola was a graduate of Marion County High School. Following graduation, Viola met and married Earnest Swinton and was happily married for 67 years. From this union, they raised together six children after relocating to Virginia. In addition to being a dedicated wife and loving mother, Viola also loved serving her church family at her home church, Third Baptist Church-where she was a devoted choir member and faithful member of various committees until her health failed. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. Viola was a School Monitor at Phoenix Elementary where she gained the love of many students. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter- Linda Swinton; three sisters and three brothers; and her sister/friend Orsecelia "Celia" Small. Viola leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Earnest Swinton Sr, and their five children: Patricia Swinton Joyner(James-deceased), Earnest Swinton Jr.(Yolanda), Timothy Swinton, Tony Swinton, and Shevawn Swinton. There were also those whom she called daughters: Charlotte "Jane" Curtis, Angela Simpson Holloway, and Janis Small Omide. Others left to cherish her memory are Sarah Harris- her aunt, Robert Swinton (Queenie)- brother-in-law, Christobell Swinton- sister-in-law, Lassiter Swinton-brother-in-law and a host of nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Viola lived a full and warm life, filled with joy. She will be fondly remembered and truly missed.
