Deacon William T. Chavis, Sr., also known as Sonny Boy, 77, of 107 F Clearfield Circle, Colonial Heights, Virginia, suddenly entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Bon Secours - Southside Medical Center, Petersburg, VA. He was born December 10, 1943 to the late Uyless and Cleo Chavis. William attended the Dinwiddie County Public School System. He worked at Central State Hospital as a groundman over 25 years where he was known for cutting the bushes as his favorite task. He was a diehard and avid Dallas Cowboys fan. William loved spending time with his family and friends. William was a member of First Baptist Church of West Petersburg during his early days of life. He later moved his membership to Harvest International Full Gospel Baptist Center, Petersburg, VA, under the Pastoral leadership of Chief Apostle Mary P. Bonner where he served as a deacon. Deacon Chavis, passionately known as, "Pop Pop", was a dedicated member of Harvest International Full Gospel Baptist Center, worshipping faithfully until his health started to decline. He sang in the Male's Chorus and was also a member of the Men's Usher Board and Security Team. Deacon Chavis enjoyed helping out and fixing things around the church. He was known as one of the, "Original Mr. Fix It" at the church. Pop Pop was a loving and valiant employee of the Harvest Child Care Center for many years. He was loved dearly by the staff and the children at the daycare. Along with his parents, William was preceded in death by his stepson, Lewis Garris; two sisters, Nancy Gertrude Chavis and Emma Mae Chavis; great-granddaughter, Skyy Blu Perry and two nephews, Raymond Lee Chavis and James Chavis. William leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Sandra Chavis; four daughters, Simone Chavis Brown, Shaquita Chavis (Gregory)devoted, Tonia Morgan and Jennifer Phelps; two sons, William Chavis and Patrick Chavis (Rosalind); four sisters, Eunice Manson, Roberta Harrison (Tony), Joyce Chavis and Gilda Chavis (Darryl); three brothers, George Chavis (Annette), Jimmy Chavis (Evonne) and Robert Chavis (Janice); father-in-law, Charlie Anderson (Charlotte); three sisters-in-law, Gayle Harrison (Eugene), Regina Meekins (Matthew) and Jennifer Johnson (John); three brothers-in-law, Stanley Taylor, Jeffrey Anderson and Kenneth Anderson; seventeen grandchildren, Sherica Dean, Jaeon and Janika Chavis, Toni and TiAsia Brown, Shanae (devoted) and Shanise Chavis (devoted), Lewis Taylor, Patra Perry, TeAsia Prosise, LaQuan and Shomari Williams, Kelashja Todd, Teniyah Hill, Darius Morgan, Ericka and Ashleigh Phelps; thirteen great-grandchildren; nine aunts; sixteen uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to include, Charles Humphry, John Holloman and the West Petersburg Community. A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, 611 S. Crater Rd., Petersburg, VA with Rev. Dr. Antonio A. Tucker, Sr., officiating. The service will be live streamed. Public viewing will be Monday, March 8, 2021 from 12:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. A facial covering will be required along with social distancing while attending all services and viewings.
