Mrs. Alice C. Rainey

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. There will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Alice C. G. Rainey passed away early on the morning of Monday, October 16, 2017 in her home. Alice was born on May 17, 1931 to Andrew Smith and Bertha Carter in Newport News, Virginia. Alice was baptized and received Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age. While attending school, she was heavily active in her academic studies; playing sports; band; and being a majorette. She graduated from Huntington High School, Newport News, in 1948 and shortly after that, began her life as an amazing wife, mother and community activist. Family was the main focus of her life as well having God as the center. Throughout her life, she had many accomplishments and honors, such as: raising twelve (12) children. nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends of the family; being appointed Honorary Mayor of Newport News; winning Mrs. Golden Newport News Pageant; being a board member on many boards such as The Office of Human Affairs; Deaconess at her church, Zion Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia; and the list goes on and on...She enjoyed dancing; singing; writing poems; listening to music; and a good joke. Some of her favorite things are: Scripture (“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13); Music (All music from classical to rap); Food (Fish); Color (Red); Flower (Gardenia). Her home was filled with compassion, laughter, and warmth which made “all” feel welcomed. She will be remembered for her love, kindness, wisdom, and strength. Alice enjoyed life and she did it with grace, dignity and that “smile”. She is preceded in death by her husband Jessie James Rainey, son Bobby Rainey, father Andrew Smith, mother Bertha Carter, brother Dewitt Carter, sister Salone Debreaux, and sister Viola Francine Carter Brown. Alice C. G. Rainey will truly be missed and leaves to cherish her memory her eleven (11) children: son Baron Gatling (Lori), daughter Adrenna Boyd (Cornelius), daughter Angela Griffin (Michael), son Kevin Rainey, daughter Gloria Dixon (Theodore), daughter Sharon Moore (Russell), son Dewitt Rainey, son Trent Rainey, son Brian Rainey, daughter Faith Moody (Jeffrey) and son James Rainey; Fifty (50) grandchildren, ninety-one (91) great-grandchildren, and fifteen (15) great, great-grandchildren; her loving sister Senora Carter Braxton (Sooty); her loving nieces and nephews, and a host of loving family and friends. “...'Well done, good and faithful servant!..”
