Mrs. Ethel Mae Greene

Mrs. Ethel Mae Greene, was 90 years old when she entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 26, 2013. Ethel Mae Lipscomb was born October 10, 1923 in Virginia. She received her education in Newport News Public Schools. She was employed by Greyound Bus company and held other various jobs. Her greatest work and the one she enjoyed the most was that of a homemaker. Ethel married James R. Greene and to this union, they reared six children. Mother Greene was a loving, caring and devoted wife and mother. She had a strong spiritual foundation with a passion for Christ and compassion for others. She was known to be soft spoken but firm and sharply observant of those in her presence. She was an avid reader and word search champion. Everyone knew Wheel of Fortune was her favorite game show so you knew the best time to call for a chat. Mother Greene was a long time member of Zion Baptist Church where she faithfully served with the Nursing ministry until her illness. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She will be remembered for her gentle and sweet, sweet spirit. She is preceded in death by her mother; Lula Elam, husband; James R. Greene Sr., one grandson; Mario Mathews and nine siblings. Mother Greene leaves to celebrate her life, two daughters; Patrice A. Vick (Lowell) and Edwina L. Greene, four sons; James R. Greene, Jr., Edwin L. Greene Sr., Ronald A. Greene and Earnest H. Greene (Mary). One sister; Doris E. Coates, two brother; Walter T. Elam and James L. Elam (Mildred), 15 grandchildren, Tiffany Braxton (Thomas), Edwin L. Greene. Jr, (Darlecia), Thomas Cook, Melvin Mathews Jr.(Lesley), Melvinie Mathews-Turner (Kevin), Edwina Mekell Mathews, Mikah M. Mathews, James R. Greene, III, Stephanie Greene, Lamont Ward, Anthony Ward, Marcus Ward, Xavier Eley, Brian Jones, and William H. Greene, host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, some devoted; Hattie Jones, Priscilla Lynch, Pastor David & Mrs. Danita Melvin, Vernell Ponton, Bessie Thomas, Mr. & Mrs. Turner and Ruth Williams. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 12 pm until 6 pm at the M.E. Fisher Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Zion Baptist Church 633 20th Street, Newport News, VA. on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11 am. Interment will follow at the Hampton National Cemetery (University Section).
