Mr. Richard Randolph Carr

Our beloved one, Richard Randolph Carr, born on February 23, 1946, departed this life on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in New York City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adell C. Carr and Ulysses Carr Sr., and a sister, Diane Carr. After graduating from Huntington High School in 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for two years fighting in the Viet Nam War. Returning home from the war, he went to New York City where he resided until God sent an angel to call him to his eternal rest. In New York City Richard worked for the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired after 38 years. Richard knew and loved the Lord. He gave his life to the Lord at the Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, Va. Upon his arrival in New York City he promptly became a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Richard was a kind, caring, and giving person. When anyone expressed gratitude for his generosity he would simply say flail I want to do is God's wilL" Helping people was his vocation in life and he excelled at it. There was never a time that if someone reached out to him, that he did not reach back. Not only did he reach back, but he would go above and beyond what was asked of him. His great joy in life was helping others in every way that he could. Richard found humor in every situation. He had the great ability of making people laugh; even when they didn't want to. Richard lived life to the fullest never settling for less than the best, and the best is what he gave of himself to everyone who was blessed to know him. Richard always quoted Dr. Martin Luther King when he said ill have been to the mountain top, and I have seen the promised land" We who knew him as father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend know that he has finally reached that promised land he spoke about so often. Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, April Barnette; his grandson, Chris; his granddaughter La-Shaye;his great grand Ma-Kiya; three sisters, Rosetta Carr of NYC; Marie Draughn and Geraldine Jegede of Newport News,Va; four brothers, Milton Carr and wife Ann of Manning, SC; Ulysses Carr, Jr. and wife Mary; Randolph Carr and wife Shirley of Newport News,VA; Eugene Carr and wife Christine of East Orange, NJ; four aunts, Lillian Carr of Newport News,Va; Rosa Meekins Wilson of Hampton; Ruth Barrett of NYC; and Mary Craig of Newport News, VA; and two god daughters, Lorraine James of NYC and Marie Gresham of Newport News, VA; along with a whole host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Friday, March 9 at Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue, Newport News, VA. Burial will be in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk on Friday, March 9 at 1:00 pm with Military Honors. Viewing will be Thursday, March 8 from 12 Noon - 6:00 PM at M.E. Fisher Funeral Home, Inc., 2117 Madison Avenue, Newport News, VA and two hours prior at the church.
